54 Jefferson, home to the Grand Rapids Public Museum from 1940 to 1994, is being repurposed as an ArtPrize venue by SiTE:LAB, winner of last year’s juried award for outstanding venue. Vacant since the museum moved to the Van Andel Museum Center, 54 Jefferson was left largely intact. Extant dioramas, showcases and exhibits will provide a unique environment for an exhibition of largely site-specific and installation-based work selected by SiTE:LAB curator Paul Amenta. SiTE:LAB is a Grand Rapids-based non-profit that organizes art exhibits in temporary locations. In 2011, SiTE:LAB partnered with the University of Michigan School of Art & Design on an ArtPrize venue in the old Junior Achievement Building at Division and Fulton. 54 Jefferson is being made available to SiTE:LAB through the generosity of the Grand Rapids Public Museum and the City of Grand Rapids.
